Manual
Therapy
Manual therapy is the use of hands on techniques to move the tissues
and joints of the body. Together with exercise it is a universally
recognized approach for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions
and has been shown to be safe and effective.
Response to treatment depends on the nature of the problem; many
patients see rapid changes and pain relief, while others with more
complicated problems will improve with work and time.
Exercise
Exercises are an important part of the overall rehabilitation process.
This may include stretches and strengthening, many of which can
be done at home without any special equipment. Physical exercise
is important for maintaining physical fitness and can contribute
positively to maintaining a healthy weight; building and maintaining
healthy bone density, muscle strength, and joint mobility; promoting
physiological well-being; reducing surgical risks; and strengthening
the immune system.
Traction
Traction is a gentle way to stretch soft tissues and decrease pressure
on the discs, nerves, and joints of the spine. It is a very effective
technique to relieve pain in those with disc problems and severe
osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease, especially in the
neck and back.
Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is the treatment of the soft tissues of the body
to gain a therapeutic response. Swedish massage is currently the
most common form of therapy practiced; however, massage therapists
may use a variety of therapies and techniques, depending on your
needs. Our Registered Massage Therapists offer therapeutic massage
in response to injury, relaxation massage, pre and post natal massage,
and manual lymphatic drainage secondary to cancer treatments.
Pre and Post Natal Massage
Pregnancy is an exciting time in a women’s life. However,
it can also be a stressful and uncomfortable time with physical
changes. Common complaints include minor aches and pains, sore feet,
nausea and fatigue; some women can experience more severe back,
leg or hip pain. Since pregnant women are advised not to take most
medications, the drug-free approach of massage therapy can be an
invaluable tool in relieving pain.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Manual lymphatic drainage is frequently used in treating swelling
(edema) and lymphedema often associated with cancer treatment. MLD
can be used by everyone to stimulate the circulatory and lymphatic
systems which can stimulate the immune and nervous systems to create
a deep sense of restfulness.
Modalities
From time to time, we may use different types of modalities to treat
our clients in order to decrease pain, swelling, and to increase
healing time.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create thermal and
non-thermal effects. It can help to reduce or control pain and muscle
spasm, decrease inflammation, increase circulation and soft tissue
mobility, and break down scar tissue. Ultrasound is used to manage
many soft tissue conditions, including tendonitis, bursitis, muscle
strains, and ligament sprains.
Interferential Current (IFC)
Interferential current uses tiny electrical impulses over the injured
area to decrease pain and promote healing. It helps to restore normal
movement and accelerates the healing process. Many patients enjoy
this treatment and describe it as being very relaxing.
Hot and Cold Packs
In certain instances, your physiotherapist may decide to treat your
injury with either a hot or cold pack, especially before or after
hands-on treatment is performed. Heat is used to relax muscles,
increase circulation, decrease pain and stiffness, and allow greater
freedom of movement in a specific area. Mild cooling is used to
control inflammation, pain, and swelling, and is very effective
for acute conditions.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a method of balancing the body's energy by inserting
needles under the skin at specific points along energy pathways
(meridians), to prevent or cure diseases and/or disorders. Modern
approaches recognize that needles inserted at acupuncture points
induce biochemical changes in the body. Acupuncture is a safe, effective
way to complement and enhance conventional medical treatment. Qualified
physiotherapists use acupuncture to treat various orthopaedic conditions.
